Time Out New York Spa Guide

Why we love it: Let’s say you’ve thrown your back out, and, at your wit’s end, you mention it to a staffer at this homey Brooklyn fitness-spa-yoga center. He says, “Oh, your [insert Latin muscle term] is tight, and that’s causing you to pull your hip in when you walk. Let’s do the warrior pose for a minute.” Then he prescribes a combination of exercise, stretching and massage, and cures you. This kind of expertise—and the center’s small-neighborhood feel—is what earns our admiration.

This combination fitness and wellness center offers personal training sessions, yoga classes, nutritional counseling, massages, and acupuncture treatments to a small clientele of neighborhood locals and parents. Potted plants line the walls, sunlight floods through floor-to-ceiling windows, and yoga mats are scattered across the wood floors. Classes, massages, and body treatments can be purchased individually or as part of a long-term membership; members are paired with a fitness coach, bodywork specialist, and nutritionist, who can also meet clients at the grocery store to plan out a weekly menu. The massage options include ayurvedic, deep-tissue, trigger-point, and hot-stone variations, with an emphasis on soothing post-workout or post-injury aches and pains. Along with more traditional cardio and yoga classes, the fitness schedule includes offbeat activities like co-owners Tomas and Alejandra’s on-land surfing course, which covers board maneuvering and breathing techniques. The spot also holds tumbling and Intro to Skateboarding classes for kids (ages 18 months to 12 years), as well as postnatal Baby Bungee classes for new moms and their infants.

A Child Grows in Brooklyn

This glowing review starts out: "I try to keep my ear to the ground for everything “Brooklyn” and “parenting”, and recently my ear has been buzzing with accolades about Everyday Athlete Studio in Carroll Gardens. My friend/fellow blogger Jesse at Word on Columbia Street raved about it recently and it piqued my interest: Dude Yoga? Mommy Boot Camp with on-site daycare? A son who had been tumbling there for 2 years straight? (I know how rare that kind of commitment can be for a kid!) I hadn’t been in to visit Everyday Athlete since it first opened when I got a delicious  prenatal massage. It was time for me to make a return visit.

"What strikes you initially about Everyday Athlete: it isn’t your typical “gym” or kids’ fitness studio. Forget mirrors, rows of machines and dirty floors. Forget dank locker rooms with rows of hard metal.  This sun drenched studio has a wood paneled ceiling and floor (that is sprung), a cubby full of neatly stacked tennis shoes, two private changing rooms that reflect a spa-like environment and plants growing everywhere.  This is a well-cared for studio with dedicated on-site owners (they actually live upstairs with their daughter)."
